The environmental project "Free Current" has been launched in Kazan again, aimed at cleaning the Kazanka riverbed. The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Ecology and the regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society as part of a large scientific work that has been underway since 2022. This is a comprehensive project "Improving the ecological condition of rivers and reservoirs of the Republic of Tatarstan".

In 2022, geographical studies have already been carried out in the catchment area of the Kazanka River and its tributaries, a coordinated schedule for water sampling, the composition and scope of research, as well as daily selections during the main phase of the spring flood. Negative impact factors were identified, among which most of them are objects of accumulation of livestock waste and disposal of solid municipal waste, plowing of land within the boundaries of the coastal protective strip.

"In continuation of these works aimed at improving the ecological condition of water bodies, the Free Current subproject was launched in 2023. This project is part of our extensive work on the ecological rehabilitation of Kazanka. Together with the regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society, we have been clearing debris on the river for the second year now," says Vyacheslav Dolgov, head of the Department of Water Protection.

Let us recall that in 2023, the forces of the regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society and volunteers dismantled 25 places of tree debris: This is 1,700 cubic meters of wood, 1,200 tons of trees and more than 480 bags of garbage.

"Tree blockages pose a danger to small vessels, violate the natural conditions of the fish habitat, are a storage of household waste entering the river from settlements, and reduce the speed of the river, which leads to siltation of the watercourse," said the deputy chairman of the regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society in the Republic of Tatarstan Andrey Agarkov.

"In 2023, we cleared 25 logjams. The height of the largest of them above the water level was three meters, and the width was seven meters. After cleaning, the river "breathed"," the speaker noted.

Let us recall that the project of the Ministry of Ecology of the Republic of Tatarstan "Free Current" is aimed at supporting the achievement of the goals of the national project "Ecology"
