Today, on November 24, at the initiative of Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko in Kazan, the heads of regional authorities discussed the experience of improving the Volga River for consideration in the work on the new united water project/

The seminar is attended by Pavel Baryshev, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of Russia, Alexey Yeresko, Deputy Minister of Construction and Housing of Russia, heads of regional ministries of natural Resources and ecology, as well as ministries of Construction and Housing, water utilities and contractors.

The sessions are moderated by Elena Dovlatova, Executive Director of the Russian Association of Water Supply and Sanitation.

Pavel Baryshev made the main report during the first session. He welcomed the participants of the seminar and outlined the main topics of the meeting.

"The Volga is one of the main waterways of our country. This is the "home" for 60 million Russians, as well as a powerful node of the state economy – it is along the banks of the Volga that most of the industrial production and agricultural areas of the country are concentrated. The toxic impact on the Volga ecosystem exceeds the average in Russia by 5 times. That is why the experience of implementing a project to reduce the volume of pollutants in the Volga is so important when developing a new project," the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology of Russia noted in his speech. The speaker said that in the whole country, more than 70% of the existing treatment facilities were built 30-50 years ago and 80% of them require an early complete modernization with a change in treatment technology, and some of them are not subject to restoration and must be built anew.

He gave figures on the volume of discharges into water bodies. According to the analysis of the Ministry of Natural Resources, more than 35.5 cubic km of water is annually discharged into reservoirs throughout the country, of which 11.58 cubic km is contaminated. 38% of the total volume of contaminated discharges (4.49 cubic km) is discharged into the Volga basin. 83% of them are housing and communal services discharges, 15% are industry, the rest is agriculture and other industries. One of the main problems Baryshev identified is the insufficient degree of purification of discharges. The federal project "Improvement of the Volga" is designed to solve this problem. The key objective of which is to reduce the share of contaminated wastewater by 2024. 16 subjects of Russia take part in the project.

The Federal head stressed that Tatarstan entered the top 3 regions in the rating of Russian subjects for the implementation of the federal project "Improving the Volga", which is conducted within the framework of the national project "Ecology".

The Nizhny Novgorod Region is in the first place of the rating, the Samara region is in the second place. After Tatarstan, Moscow and Yaroslavl regions are in 4th and 5th place.

Speaking about Tatarstan, Pavel Baryshev noted: "It is necessary to take an example from the republic.  No disruption of deadlines for events. Colleagues, their result is impressive!"
