Activities to measure the amount of oxygen in reservoirs are regularly held in Tatarstan. This year, the campaign started again from Lake Karakul in the Nizhnekamsk district. The reservoir is one of the largest in the republic, and red book plants are found in its coastal zone. Rare fish species also live in the water column. A campaign is being held for their safety.

By drilling wells, specialists from the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan take water samples and identify their oxygen saturation level. After that, the aeration process takes place – the penetration of air into the water column. To do this, reed stalks are inserted into the drilled holes: they serve as a "conductor" of oxygen. If such work is not carried out, then due to lack of oxygen under the ice, the fish may die.

This year, inspectors from the Zakamsky Department of the Ministry of Ecology and specialists from the State Committee for Biological Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan drilled more than 200 holes on the surface of the lake. The campaign takes place every year, so local residents often join the process. For them, this event is an opportunity to participate in the preservation of an important natural site.

Work on drilling holes for water access to oxygen will take place in other reservoirs of the republic.
