Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Marat Khusnullin said today that 104 wastewater disposal facilities have already been put into operation since the beginning of the federal project "Improvement of the Volga". The discharge of untreated wastewater into the river has been halved.

"For several years we have been actively engaged in preserving the Volga ecosystem. To do this, according to the federal project "Improvement of the Volga", treatment facilities equipped with special equipment for maximum wastewater treatment are being installed in coastal areas and rivers flowing into the Volga. Thus, the Russian construction complex contributes to reducing the load on the Volga River, which has a positive effect on the environment and the standard of living of citizens. In total, 104 facilities have been commissioned over the past five years, including 11 facilities last year. As a result, discharges of polluted wastewater into the Volga River decreased from 3.17 cubic km per year to 1.7 cubic km per year. This year we will continue this work," Marat Khusnullin said.

He recalled that 16 regions are involved in the implementation of the Volga Health Improvement project. Large-scale work is being carried out on the construction of new and reconstruction of existing sewage treatment plants and wastewater disposal facilities. Over the past five years, this program has become one of the most relevant and in-demand, as it is aimed at improving the environmental situation in the Volga basin.

This year, work is planned at 32 sites, including in Tatarstan. In the Republic, work continues on the reclamation of the silt fields of the BOSK of Kazan. They started in 2021, and 66.2% of the planned volume has already been completed.

Also, within the framework of the federal project "Improvement of the Volga River", the reconstruction of biological treatment facilities in Kazan will be completed in 2024.

Thanks to the federal project "Improvement of the Volga", by the end of 2024, the share of contaminated wastewater entering the Volga should be reduced three times – from 3.17 to 1.05 cubic km per year.

The federal project "Improving the Volga River" is being implemented within the framework of the national project "Ecology", adopted by decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
