May 12 – Day of Environmental Education

The Day of Environmental Education is celebrated annually on May 12 in Russia and the CIS countries. The main goal of the holiday is the actualization of environmental knowledge in all sciences and all fields of human activity.
The ecological holiday is directly related to every inhabitant of the Earth, since the planet is a home for people, regardless of age, nationality, and life status. The Day of Environmental Education encourages people to think about how to protect the environment and prevent its catastrophe. On this day, people can take part in various environmental actions, both educational and practical. These are nature protection measures like cleaning of river banks and reservoirs, parks, landscaping of territories, exhibitions, conferences and creative competitions on the theme of nature conservation.
In the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan, environmental education is one of the priority areas. Acquaintance with environmental issues begins with preschool age and continues to university vocational training and postgraduate retraining and professional development of environmental specialists. In addition, environmental knowledge reaches the republic’s population through the media, as well as through various projects implemented by museums, libraries, environmental institutions, sports and tourist organizations of Tatarstan.
