September 29th - the World Sea Day

29 September 2016, Thursday

The World Sea Day is one of the international holidays in the system of the United Nations Organizations. This day has been celebrated since 1978 by the decision of the 10th session of the Assembly of the Intergovernmental Maritime Consultative Organization. Before 1980 it was celebrated on March 17th, and then it was decided to move the date up to one of the days of the last full week of September.

The aim of the World Sea Day is to attract the attention of the world community to the relevant problems of preservation of biological, natural and recreational sea resources for the future generations. Besides preservation of the biodiversity of water areas, another burning problem proclaimed by the World Sea Day lies in the safety of maritime transportation, anti-poaching activity, the need to protect the water area from oil pollution, popularization of maritime tourism and others. The World Sea Day celebration usually includes various nature protection events, ecological campaigns and meetings.
