The idea of holding the World Day for Water or the World Water Day was announced for the first time during the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) that was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.The UN General Assembly announced March 22nd the World Water Day after adopting the Resolution 47/193 on February 22, 1993. In compliance with the UNCED recommendations, this day was for the first time celebrated in 1993, and in Russia it has been celebrated since 1995.Year after year one of the UN institutions is appointed the coordinator of the events pertaining to the World Water Day being in charge of promotion of a new theme under the aegis of the Administrative Coordination Committee.
March 22nd is a unique opportunity to remind people of extreme importance of water resources for the environment and development of the society. Practical efforts will help deepen public understanding of both problems and solutions in this field.
