The World campaign “Car-Free Day” held on September 22, 2015 is meant to remind of the negative impact of motor vehicles on the environment and urge people to the idea of using alternative means of transportation, for instance, public transportation, bikes and other means. Traditionally, on this day fellow workers of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan get to work by public transportation means, or by bikes.
Starting 2009, more than 60 thousand car-owners of Tatarstan participate in the campaign. Considering that one automobile each day discharges into the air about 5-6 kg of pollutants with vehicle emissions, it is possible that during the campaign vehicle emissions decrease by 300 tons.
The tradition to hold the “Car-Free Day” was born in France in 1998. That year, about twenty cities celebrated this day. By 2001, more than a thousand cities in 35 countries officially joined the campaign.
