23 March 2026, Monday

The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan, Azat Ziganshin, paid a working visit to the Kazan Zoo. During the event, the head of the department was informed about preparations for the fourth stage of the program to revive the population of the Saker falcon, listed in the Red Book.

Alexander Malev, Deputy Director for Veterinary Care, informed the Minister about the current state of breeding pairs. One of the pairs of birds of prey placed in the zoo for breeding is in the active nesting phase. It is expected that the chicks will appear in April–May of this year.

In addition, Azat Ziganshin was shown modern equipment for breeding offspring — an incubator for birds, aviary complexes, as well as updated infrastructure facilities of the zoo.

For reference: the program for the reintroduction of the Saker falcon has been successfully implemented in the republic since 2023 with the support of SIBUR Kazanorgsintez. During this time, 24 individuals were released into their natural habitat. In 2026, it is planned to release chicks on the territory of the Saralinsky site of the Volga-Kama State Natural Biosphere Reserve. The project is one of the few examples of effective restoration of the number of rare birds of prey in Russia.
