Tatarstan's best practices in the reclamation of Kazan's silt fields need to be replicated throughout Russia

21 September 2023, Thursday

This was stated by the Deputy Chairman of Government of the Russian Federation Victoria Abramchenko during her visit. She noted that pilot projects of Tatarstan, implemented within the framework of the "Improvement of the Volga" of the national project "Ecology", can be replicated throughout the country.

Let us recall that today Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Victoria Abramchenko is visiting Tatarstan on a working visit. She has already inspected biological treatment facilities and silt fields of Kazan.  Accompanied by the Head of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia got acquainted with the work carried out at the BTP. Victoria Abramchenko was told about what works are planned in 2023.

Large-scale reconstruction of biological treatment facilities will significantly improve the quality of urban wastewater treatment.

Alexander Shadrikov, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, reported to the Deputy Prime Minister about the work under the pilot project on the reclamation of silt fields. He said that the work is being carried out within the framework of the federal project "Improvement of the Volga" of the national project "Ecology". They started ahead of schedule, in November 2021. The customer is Glavinveststroy RT. The general contractor is LLC "Yadran-Stroy". As the Minister of Ecology noted, the silt fields, which are almost half a century old, affected the quality of life not only of residents of nearby villages, but also of all Kazan residents. The facility has long since exhausted its design capacity, some sections reached 8.5 meters in depth, and given the proximity of the Kuibyshev reservoir, this could become a threat to the river. Since 2019, on behalf of the President of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan has been engaged in the selection of technologies for the project of recultivation of silt fields. Out of more than 30 proposed technologies for the reclamation of silt fields, the geotubing method was chosen – one of the most relevant today. The reclamation project is a pilot one.

Victoria Abramchenko highly appreciated Tatarstan's experience in this area. "I came to Kazan to see biological treatment facilities as an example of best practices and was really satisfied. In our country, all sewage treatment plants are in a fairly worn-out condition, the wear is 60-70%, since they were built back in Soviet times," she said.

In Kazan, the welfare of the Volga depends on the efficiency of biological treatment facilities, the Deputy Prime Minister noted.

Victoria Abramchenko explained why this project is considered advanced. "The giant landfill that we visited today, with old silt deposits, thanks to a complex, in fact pioneering technology, is being reclaimed and will no longer pose any danger to the Volga. The project is being completed on schedule at the end of 2024," the speaker added.

Also, the Deputy Prime Minister of Russia noted that Tatarstan's best practices need to be replicated further across the country. "Today we talked with the head of the republic about how to replicate this best practice across the country. Probably, we will have to hold a series of seminars in Kazan for the management bodies of the water treatment system in the Russian Federation. This experience should be shown and replicated," the speaker stressed.
