This year, the organizers deliberately abandoned paper cups at the marathon and preferred plastic bottles, which are easier to assemble and give them a second life. "It is important for us to make the marathon eco-friendly, to develop a culture of responsible attitude to nature among our participants," said Vadim Yangirov, director of the Kazan Marathon.
Thanks to SIBUR, the environmental partner of the Kazan Marathon, as well as with the active participation of athletes and volunteers, all plastic bottles used at food outlets on the track were collected and sent for recycling. Special tanks for plastic were installed at the distance, and if an athlete did not get into it on the run, volunteers promptly collected bottles and even used a boat to catch bottles that were blown into the river.
"PET bottles collected separately are easy to recycle, they are clean and valuable recyclables, and we are glad that we managed to give a second life to the plastic packaging presented at the marathon distance. We got through this ambitious task, which requires the active involvement not only of the organizers and partners, but also of each participant," said Maxim Remchukov, Director of Sustainable Development at SIBUR.
Let us recall that the Kazan Marathon is a running tour of the main sights of the city with a unique opportunity to see the capital in its heyday. The competition has been held annually since 2015 and includes distances of 3 km, 10 km, 21.1 km and a marathon distance.
