Nine Regions of the Russian Federation Signed the Declaration on the Volga

The ceremony of signing took place within the framework of the III Volga region ecological week which takes place in the Ulyanovsk region.
The document was signed by 9 subjects of the Russian Federation whose territories are located in the Volga Basin, namely: the Republic of Tatarstan, Chuvashia, Kalmykia, the Astrakhan, Ivanovo, Samara, Saratov, Tver and Ulyanovsk regions.
The Republic of Tatarstan, realizing environmental responsibility to the present and future generations of the Volga Basin inhabitants, wholly supports adoption of this historically important document – the Declaration on the Volga.
Following the principles of the Declaration is extremely urgent both for the Russian Federation as a whole and for the Republic of Tatarstan as one of the most abounding in water subjects of the Volga Federal district.
The largest on the Volga river basin, largest reservoir in Europe and third related to area reservoir in the world – the Kuibyshev reservoir – is situated in the territory of Tatarstan. The reservoir is of great significance for ensuring of social and economic development and environmental security of the population of Tatarstan. In this regard, protection and rational use of water resources is the priority direction of the state environmental policy of the Republic of Tatarstan, a basis of systemic planning and realization of campaigns for ensuring of environmental safety of the republic.
The republican purpose-oriented program “Development of a Water Management Complex of the Republic of Tatarstan for 2013 to 2020” has been developed and approved in the Republic of Tatarstan. Within the framework of its implementation the republic started a large-scale reconstruction of hydraulic engineering constructions located in the water area of the Volga River.
