The island-city Sviyazhsk will be nominated to the list of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of UNESCO

Last week, on October 15-19, one of the leading experts of the International Union for Conservation of Nature Mr. Kalev Sepp – professor of the Estonian University of Life Sciences, dean of the “Ecology and Environmental Management” faculty visited the Republic of Tatarstan.


Mr. Sepp came with a purpose to conduct expert evaluation of compliance of Sviyazhsk historical-architectural and environmental-landscape complex with the requirements and criteria of UNESCO regarding the possibility of its nomination to the list of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of UNESCO.
In order to ensure effective work of the international expert, the operative workshop was created under the guidance of the Assistant to the President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Executive Director of non-commercial organization “The Republican Foundation for Revival of Historical and Cultural Monuments of the Republic of Tatarstan” Tatyana Petrovna Larionova. Heads of departments of the Office of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan, Director of Volzhsko-Kamsky State Natural Biosphere Reserve, Deputy Heads of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan and a series of other republican authorities were actively involved in the activity of the workshop.
On October 16, a “Round Table” was organized at the Administration of the President of the Republic of Tatarstan, where experts of the republican ministries and authorities gave comprehensive answers to the questions of the expert of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, provided upon his request all the relevant materials supporting enormous cultural and historical, aesthetical and environmental value of the island-city Sviyazhsk and environmental complexes of Sviyazhsk Bay of the Kuibyshev Reservoir.
On October 17-18, Kalev Sepp was given an opportunity to familiarize at large and in detail with the outstanding landscape phenomenon of exceptional beauty and aesthetical dignity – the island-city Sviyazhsk and adjacent floodplain of the river Sviyaga.
Architectural complex of Sviyazhsk consistent with vast and various natural landscapes, picturesque groves on multiple bottomland islands unique in beauty, made strong impression on the international expert. When he met with the President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Nurgalievich Minnikhanov, the expert declared his unconditional support for the idea to nominate the island-city Sviyazhsk to the list of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage and also suggested that an international conference on conservation of natural landscape should be held in Tatarstan.
We are sure that the majority of the population of Tatarstan will look forward to this memorable day when UNESCO reaches fair verdict on well-deserved inclusion of the island-city Sviyazhsk into the marvelous constellation of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage sites.
