Today the Minister for Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan Artem Sidorov has held a regular meeting of the interdepartmental working group on elaboration of proposals related to clean-up activities of Sredniy Kaban Lake.
The representatives of Kazan Executive Committee, Rosprirodnadzor and Rospotrebnadzor Administrations for the Republic of Tatarstan, Lower-Volga basin water management board of the Federal Agency of Water Resources, natural resources companies located in the water-collecting basin of Sredniy Kaban Lake as well as the specialists of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan have taken part in the meeting on the elimination of industrial wastewater releases, flowing to Sredniy Kaban Lake through independent or city collectors.
Sredniy Kaban Lake with the Rowing Center located on its shore is one of the most important objects of 2013 Universiade. In this regard, in the framework of preparation for 2013 Universiade, all possible measures related to bringing Sredniy Kaban Lake water quality in accordance with international standards of environmental safety are taken.
In 2011 the staff of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan examined Sredniy Kaban Lake shore in order to identify the objects located on it and to find out industrial wastewater and storm water releases. As a result of these measures 27 cases of storm water, industrial and domestic wastewater releases were identified and examined on Sredniy Kaban Lake. The specialists of the Ministry sampled all the releases, the analysis of which showed that contaminants non-specific to stormwater and meltwater got into the lake with almost all the releases in concentrations far more exceeding the established standards.

In the course of the meeting the representatives of natural resources companies whose territories are located in the water-collecting basin of Sredniy Kaban Lake have made their reports on the measures taken to stop uncontrolled waste disposal.
The enterprises and organizations have been given a clear task: to eliminate all unauthorized releases into the system of Sredniy Kaban Lake by the end of 2012. Storm water releases must be treated in accordance with the requirements of legislation in force. In case of non-fulfillment the strictest measures, up to activity suspension, will be taken.
