The live broadcast from the Russian House of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) took place on December 12 as part of a meeting of the interdepartmental working group on climate policy and decarbonization plans of the Republic of Tatarstan. Elena Myakotnikova, Director of the Climate Initiatives and Carbon Regulation function at Sibur LLC, spoke online about the work of the Russian delegation at COP28 and about the technological and climate projects of Sibur LLC presented at the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties. "According to the first Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation Ilya Torosov, Russia, as part of its BRICS presidency in 2024, will initiate the creation of a contact group on climate and sustainable development," said Elena Myakotnikova.

Also at the event, the participants of the working group reviewed the results of Tatarstan's program to convert cars to compressed natural gas (methane) for 2013-2023 as one of the important areas of work in the field of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and decarbonization of the economy. They were presented by Oksana Davydova, Deputy Head of the Fuel Infrastructure and Gas Supply Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Republic of Tatarstan.

"Reducing emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere by switching cars to gas for 11 years of the program amounted to more than 23 thousand tons per year, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions reached more than 1 million tons of CO2 equivalent," Deputy Minister of Ecology of Tatarstan Olga Manidicheva emphasized the environmental component of the Program.

For reference: The 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) was held in Dubai from November 30 to December 12, 2023. The main issues of the conference were the adaptation of states to a hotter climate and the further decarbonization of energy systems. The conference was attended by about 80 thousand people from 198 countries of the world.

In 2024, the Russian Federation will assume the chairmanship of the BRICS international association (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), which plays a significant role in solving many global and regional issues. The main event of the presidency is the meeting of the Heads of state (BRICS Summit) — it will be held in Kazan, which has been officially approved as the capital of the presidency.
