Every year on March 22, World Water Day, or the Water resources Day, is marked. This day is aimed at attracting public attention to the state of water bodies and the problems associated with their restoration and protection. The idea of holding an ecological holiday was first voiced at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED)in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro.
Water is one of the most important factors affecting human life. Water resources are of great importance in all spheres of economic, social, and human development. Water has the power and energy. Despite the fact that 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water, only 1% of the total water resources of the planet is drinking water. The Republic of Tatarstan is rich in water resources. The river network of the republic consists of 9,965 rivers with a total length of 21,457 km. The largest rivers are the Volga and the Kama. On the territory of the region there are 6,600 lakes and artificial reservoirs with a total area of 4,380 thousand km2 (lakes 6.45%). Among the regions of the federal district, Tatarstan ranks first in the total area of lakes and artificial reservoirs (the largest is the Kuibyshev and Nizhnekamsk reservoirs) and the third in terms of lakes.
