29 November 2016, Tuesday

Today, the 29th of November, is the Day of creation of the All-Russian Wildlife Conservation Society (AWCS). The main goal of the Society is to organize public movement for healthy and favorable ecological situation in Russia, for creation of the conditions promoting its sustainable and ecologically safe development. On November 29, 1924, the Charter of the AWCS was adopted after being discussed for a long period of time during joint meetings of the Nature Protection Department and the All-Russian Committee for Protection of Nature Monuments under the People’s Commissariat of Education. So, this day is now considered the day of creation of the All-Russian Wildlife Conservation Society. At that time the most important nature-related problems included detection and accounting of all the nature funds, assurance of protection of rare and endangered species of flora and fauna, as well as elaboration of the nature protection legislation. An important place was also occupied by advocacy of the ideas of nature protection among population: lectures, discussions and disputes on nature protection, arrangement of constant and regular exhibitions, issuance of literature containing nature protection-related materials, and carrying out of tours. Within the first years of its existence, the All-Russian Wildlife Conservation Society voluntarily undertook the commitment on execution of the functions of public control over the use of natural resources as well as adherence to the nature protection legislation. The goal of the All-Russian Wildlife Conservation Society lied in the necessity to arrange voluntary unification of scientific efforts and the most progressively thinking public to assure restoration and rational use of the country's natural resources.
