Valerian Ivanovich Garanin, an outstanding scientist, ecologist, and one of the largest Russian zoologists and herpetologists, passed away last night at the age of 98. His professional career was inextricably linked with the study of the interaction of animals with the environment and issues of nature conservation.
In 1952, Valerian Ivanovich graduated from the Biology and Soil Faculty of Kazan University. For many years he worked as a laboratory assistant at the zoological laboratory, as a senior researcher, and was engaged in teaching activities. In 1965, he successfully defended his PhD thesis in biological sciences.
Valerian Ivanovich was at the origin of many environmental initiatives. He was one of the compilers and editors of the Red Book of the Republic of Tatarstan, the organizer of scientific research on the territory of the Volga-Kama State Reserve and in the flood zone during the creation of the Kuibyshev reservoir.
In 2018, the Ministry of Ecology of the Republic of Tatarstan, based on the memoirs of Valerian Ivanovich, published the book "Biology of the Soul", which became the most important work on the history of nature protection in our region.

Valerian Ivanovich Garanin's farewell will take place on March 29 at 11:00 a.m. in the Marble Hall of Kazan Federal University at 35 Kremlevskaya St., Kazan.
