Tatarstan's Minister of Ecology presented the republic's experience at the International Big City Ecology Forum

24 March 2026, Tuesday

The International Forum "Ecology of the Big City" continues in St. Petersburg, which is held under the auspices of the Nevsky International Ecological Congress and in support of the national project "Ecological Well-being". The event brought together more than 6,000 participants from 65 regions of Russia and a dozen other countries.

The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan, Azat Ziganshin, delivered a report at the forum of regions "The Russian Ecological Society: Shaping an intelligent eco-policy". He spoke about the systematic work being carried out in Tatarstan in the field of environmental protection and the unique model of open dialogue built in the Republic with the support of the President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov.

"In recent years, the republic has implemented more than 1,300 environmental protection measures worth almost 107 billion rubles. We have managed to prevent 117 billion rubles worth of environmental damage and improve the quality of life for 3.5 million people," said Azat Ziganshin.

The Minister elaborated on the significant results achieved within the framework of the national Ecology project. Among the key projects are the reconstruction of biological treatment facilities in Kazan, which has improved environmental conditions for more than 2 million people, and the reclamation of the Samosyrovsky landfill with a unique degassing system. Azat Ziganshin outlined promising tasks within the framework of the new national project "Environmental well-being". Since 2025, the Melekeski River has been cleared in Naberezhnye Chelny. Thanks to the support of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the rehabilitation of the Chelna River has been agreed upon for the 400th anniversary of the motor City. Starting in 2028, a full-scale clearing of the Noksy River, a landmark for Kazan, is planned.

The Head of the Ministry of Ecology of the Republic of Tatarstan stressed that environmental well-being is impossible without the active participation of residents. For the fifth year in a row, the Republic has taken first place in the All-Russian campaign "Water of Russia". In 2025 alone, more than 400,000 people came to the river banks to contribute to nature conservation.

Concluding his speech, the Minister invited the forum participants to Naberezhnye Chelny for a key event — the Ecological Congress "Water of Russia".

"An environmental congress will be held in Naberezhnye Chelny from April 16 to 17 "Water of Russia". This is a key federal event that will combine two important parts. On April 16, an expanded meeting on “Topical issues of water use” will be held, and on April 17, we will give a solemn start to the new season of the campaign on the embankment.“Water of Russia". And it is a great honor for us that the central launch of the action this year will be held in Tatarstan, which is a recognized leader of this movement," said Azat Ziganshin.

In addition to the speech, the head of the environmental protection agency took part in a business breakfast of regional ministers and a plenary session of the forum.

The two—day program of the forum includes more than 60 events and seven thematic tracks, the main purpose of which is to strengthen environmental safety and improve the quality of life in large cities.
