On March 12-13, 2026, Kazan will host a large-scale hackathon "Ecohack: Clean Ocean", organized with the support of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan and Mirrico.
The event, which brings together more than a hundred participants from Russia, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, will become a key event on the environmental agenda within the framework of the Kazan Digital Legends series and the Kazan Digital Week international forum.
The hackathon is aimed at finding innovative solutions to combat pollution of the hydrosphere, which meets the goals of the national Environmental Well-being project. The contestants will have to work on nine relevant cases, including the development of microplastic recycling technologies, the creation of pollution forecasting systems and bioremediation methods. The prize fund of the competition is 450 thousand rubles.
The special significance of the event is given by its connection with the scientific research mission of the famous traveler Fyodor Konyukhov. In December 2026, he will embark on a solo expedition across the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans on a Mirrico raft made from recycled plastic. The water samples collected during the round-the-world trip will be transferred to scientists for analysis.
"Tatarstan has established an effective practice of interaction between science, government, business and society to solve the most complex environmental problems. Support for initiatives such as the Clean Ocean hackathon and the Fyodor Konyukhov expedition is a contribution to global science and the ecological well-being of the planet," the Ministry of Ecology of the Republic of Tatarstan notes.
