In Nizhnekamsk, on Lake Karakul, the annual ecological campaign "Fish – to be!" was held in support of the national project "Ecological well-being". The event was organized by the Zakamsky Territorial Department of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan together with specialists from the RT State Committee on Bioresources. Active support was provided by members of the public and local residents.
The choice of the event's location is not accidental: Lake Karakul is one of the largest natural reservoirs in the republic, and its coastal zone is distinguished by its biodiversity, including rare plant species listed in the Red Book.
During the campaign, the participants carried out large-scale work on artificial oxygen saturation of water. More than 500 holes have been drilled on the surface of the reservoir, into which reed stalks are installed. This method helps to prevent the formation of dense ice cover and ensure efficient gas exchange, which is crucial for preventing winter fish freezes.
Residents of Nizhnekamsk who joined the campaign shared their impressions:
"For us, this is not just a one-time event, but an opportunity to help the nature of our hometown. We understand that without human help, fish under the ice have a hard time. It would seem that it's easy to cut a hole, but it depends on such small things whether life in the lake will be preserved. We are glad to contribute to a great cause," said the participants of the campaign from among the local residents.
The specialists of the Ministry of Ecology explained the importance of systematic work on the aeration of reservoirs:
"The winter period is a critical time for aquatic biological resources. Due to the ice cover, the natural gas exchange is disrupted, and the oxygen content in the water drops to critical levels. If such events are not carried out, mass death of fish is possible. Installing reed stalks in drilled holes is a simple but effective way to ensure oxygen access even in severe frosts. Such work is needed annually on all major reservoirs, and we are grateful to the residents for their response and help," the Zakamye inspectors noted.
It should be recalled that such campaigns as "Fish - to be!" make a significant contribution to the implementation of the goals and objectives of the national project "Ecological well-being", aimed, among other things, at preserving unique water bodies and biological diversity in the country.
