The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan, Azat Ziganshin, visited SIBUR's Nizhnekamsk enterprise for the first time, where he evaluated Nizhnekamskneftekhim's new olefin complex and met with the staff.
During the visit, the Minister got acquainted with the environmental standards and technologies of new investment projects. In 2025, the plant completed the construction of local wastewater treatment plants, reducing fresh water consumption by 3 million m3 and wastewater discharge by 4 million m3 annually. A liquid waste disposal plant was launched, which processes 4.8 thousand tons per year.
In conjunction with ethylene, SIBUR implements a range of projects aimed at import substitution of widely demanded modern synthetic materials.
The introduction of new production facilities will create more than 1,100 high-tech jobs, strengthening the social and economic importance of petrochemicals for the region.
The introduction of environmental technologies has become possible thanks to large-scale investments. Since 2022, Nizhnekamskneftekhim has allocated more than 13 billion rubles to environmental protection measures in Nizhnekamsk under an agreement with Rosprirodnadzor. The investments made it possible to implement key projects: to replace burners in the furnaces of ethylene and butyl rubber plants, to introduce smokeless flare systems, to expand the eco-monitoring network, to reclaim silt accumulators near the village of Borok, to carry out a large-scale reconstruction of the industrial waste landfill.
The third stage of reconstruction of biological treatment facilities is expected to be completed in mid-2026. The launch of the upgraded BOS will double the cleaning efficiency and reduce the load on the Kama River by 426 tons of pollutants per year.
During an inspection of the EP-600 central control room, the Minister of Ecology was told about a large-scale monitoring system that includes seven environmental posts. In total, in 2025, more than 1.3 million studies of atmospheric air quality were performed around the clock, and no exceedances of the maximum permissible concentration were detected. According to the Ministry of Ecology of Tatarstan, since 2018 in Nizhnekamsk, the number of complaints from residents about the quality of atmospheric air has decreased 145 times. In 2018, 583 applications were received, and in 2025 their number decreased to four.
Azat Ziganshin also appreciated the modern working conditions of the company's employees and the psychological relief room, equipped with a sleep capsule and massage chairs, as well as oxygen cocktails.
"It is a great honor for me to visit your company. Together we are implementing an important environmental mission that contributes to the well-being and safety of the Nizhnekamsk industrial hub. A lot has been done in recent years to improve the environmental friendliness of production, reduce emissions, and introduce new safe technologies. You pay great attention to the green agenda, both in the context of the development of your company and to create a comfortable and safe future for every resident of Nizhnekamsk," said Minister of Ecology Azat Ziganshin.
