A meeting of the working group on regulation of the operating modes of the Volga-Kama cascade was held

7 May 2025, Wednesday

A meeting of the Interdepartmental Working Group on regulating the operation of reservoirs in the Volga-Kama Cascade, where issues of special spring water release were discussed, was held today.

Rosvodresursy proposed to extend the special spring release (fishing shelf) until May 16 at a cost of 15,000 cubic meters/s for the Kuibyshev reservoir and 14,000 cubic meters/s for the Volgograd reservoir.

The decision to extend the fisheries shelf may lead to non-filling of the main regulating capacity of the Volga-Kama cascade (Kuibyshev reservoir) for an inter-life period, which poses a threat of water scarcity in the territories of the subjects of the entire Lower Volga.

During the meeting, it was noted that the forecast of water inflow to the reservoirs of the Volga-Kama cascade in the second quarter is 61% of the norm. Currently, the level of the Kuibyshev reservoir is about 52.0 m BS with a normal retaining level of 53.0 m BS.

The Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan came up with a proposal for an optimal compromise solution that would ensure a balance between fisheries management and maintaining sufficient water resources in the Kuibyshev reservoir for the summer and autumn period. Tatarstan has proposed a scenario with a more rational use of water, which takes into account the interests of all regions of the Volga region. Tatarstan's proposal was not accepted.

The next meeting of the Interdepartmental Working Group on regulating the operating modes of the reservoirs of the Volga-Kama Cascade is scheduled for May 15, 2025, where final decisions will be made on the operating modes of the waterworks, taking into account the current hydrological situation.
