Every year, on October 31, the International Day of the Black Sea is celebrated. This is an amazing aquatic world that washes the shores of seven states and holds many secrets. Today we will share interesting Black Sea facts:
- The Black Sea is saturated with hydrogen sulfide, especially at depths over 150 meters. At this level, the concentration of gas creates unsuitable conditions for most living organisms.
- The Black Sea is the least inhabited of the seas. Its expanses are home to 2,500 species of animals, 3 species of mammals (dolphins, porpoises and white-bellied seals) and 270 species of algae grow.
- The Black Sea is constantly growing. Every year it recovers about 0.5 mm from the land. In the last 100 years alone, the water level has risen by 30 cm.
There are several versions of why the Black Sea got its name. Here are some of them:
- It is connected with the color designation of different parts of the world, where the north was marked in black, and the Black Sea was considered northern.
- The name comes from the fact that objects immersed in its depths turn black due to the hydrogen sulfide content in the water.
- The Black Sea got its name because of the difficulties of navigation, and "black" has become synonymous with "mysterious" and "unknown".
