The Feast of the White Cranes. Today is the day of bright memory of the fallen on the battlefields

22 October 2024, Tuesday

It seems to me sometimes that the soldiers,

that did not come from the bloody fields ,

They didn't lie down in this land,

But turned into white cranes.

                                   (R. Gamzatov)

Today, Russia celebrates a memorable date dedicated to those who gave their lives for the peace and freedom of our country. On this day, we remember all those who did not return home, and whose lives were interrupted by the war.

The history of the White Cranes Holiday originates in Dagestan. It was first celebrated in August 1986, timed to coincide with the opening of the first monument depicting cranes dedicated to the Great Patriotic War.

The initiator of the holiday was Dagestan poet and writer Rasul Gamzatov. After visiting the iconic places that preserve the memory of the Great Patriotic War, he created the poem "Cranes" in 1965. It was Rasul Gamzatov who suggested celebrating the White Cranes Holiday as a day of remembrance and respect for the victims of wars. In 2009, October 22 was added to the list of international holidays and began to be celebrated as a Day of Solidarity and a poetic song about fallen soldiers around the world.

Today, poetry meetings and literary readings are organized, and memorial events are held aimed at passing on to the younger generation the idea of the need to respect each other. On this day, traditionally, the participants of the action launch white cranes made with their own hands into the sky as a sign of respect for the dead.

Let the Day of the White Cranes remind us of the importance of peace and unity, the need to honor the memory of all those who left, but remained in our hearts forever.

The theme of peace and unity in the fight against Nazism will be fundamental in the coming year. At the summit of the heads of the CIS countries, it was decided to declare 2025 the Year of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. In the Republic of Tatarstan the coming year will be held under the auspices of the Year of Defender of the Fatherland. Let us recall that in 2022, employees of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan updated the memorial complex dedicated to the participants of the Great Patriotic War in the village of Yambulatovo and installed a bust of the Hero of the Soviet Union, tankman Semyon Konovalov. In the small homeland of the hero, in the village of Yambulatovo, every student knows about the feat of Semyon Konovalov, a small museum was opened here, in the post–war years an obelisk appeared with the names of all participants in the Great Patriotic War - natives of the Yambulatovsky rural settlement. The film "Indestructible" was shot about the feat of the tanker.
