Tatarstan topped the ESG rating of the Volga regions
In the overall ranking of the subjects of the Russian Federation, the republic is in the honorable second place.
The rating was compiled by the Ecofon Environmental Protection Fund based on the results of 2023. The effectiveness of the regional management system in the fields of ecology, social responsibility and management was evaluated.
The rating compilers used open data from ministries and interdepartmental information systems, as well as information on the state of the environment collected on the foundation's platform.
The ESG rating is a weighted sum of the points of the sections:
"Ecology" is an assessment of the environmental safety management system in the region in terms of the impact of environmental factors on the quality of life of the population, the state of the environment, the availability and implementation of environmental and climate projects,
"Society" - assessment of the social component in the activities of the executive authorities of the subject,
"Management" is an assessment of the risks and quality of the system and practice of public administration.
When analyzing the ecological block, 60 indicators (34% of the specific weight) were evaluated, including the volume of waste, water condition, climate, availability of specially protected areas, soil condition, energy development, and air condition.
The social block includes 52 indicators (33% of the share) - demographic parameters, education and science, infrastructure and housing, expenses and incomes of the population, employment, health care.
The management unit is aimed at evaluating 24 indicators (33% of the share) that reflect the effectiveness of public administration in the region and financial data.

The Russian non–profit organization Foundation for Environmental Protection - Ecofon was founded in September 2021 and implements environmental and socially oriented projects that contribute to the fulfillment of tasks in the field of environmental protection, increase the involvement of civil society in the conservation of biological diversity, the formation of ecological thinking and ecological culture among the younger generation.
