1. The name of the word comes from the Old Slavic word "vlga" or "moisture". In ancient times it was called "Ra", and in the Middle Ages "Itil".

2. The Volga is the largest river in Europe. Its length is 3,530 km. It will take you a whole month to walk along the entire river!

3. The greatest depth of the Volga is 41.5 meters. This is the height of a 14-storey building!

4. The Volga flows through the territory of 15 subjects of Russia. There are 4 million-plus cities on the banks of the river: Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Samara and Volgograd.

5. There are more than 70 species of fish in the river. The most valuable species are sturgeon.
