Today the Day of reserves and national parks is celebrated

11 January 2018, Thursday

There is a tradition in our country to celebrate the Day of reserves and national parks on January 11. The first state reserve - Barguzin was founded on this day in 1917 in Russia with the purpose to preserve the population of Barguzin sable. In 1986, by UNESCO's decision this reserve received the biosphere status and was included in the international network of biosphere reserves. Today this protected place is an integral part of the World Natural Heritage Site "Lake Baikal" together with other reserves and national parks belonging to the "Reserved Necklace" (Barguzin, Baikal, Baikal-Lensky Reserves, Baikal National Park).

Today in Russia there are more than 13 thousand specially protected natural areas of federal, regional and local importance. The federal system of protected areas at this stage includes 105 state nature reserves, 52 national parks, 57 federal wildlife sanctuaries, 17 natural monuments, and 67 botanical gardens. Within the framework of the Year of Ecology two reserves ("Vasjugansk" and "East of the Gulf of Finland") and two national parks ("Sengileev Mountains" and "Ladoga Skerries") were founded.
