Notenoughoxygen. Danger of mass death of fishon Kharovoyelake.

9 February 2017, Thursday

Today officials of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Tatarstan, social activists and residentsin Kazan met onKharovoyelake. They drilled more than 50 wells to save the fish from oxygen starvation. “Previously, the experts of the Central Specialized Inspection for Analytical Control of the Ministry of Ecology sampled natural water in the Kharovoyelake. The toxicological analysis showed that the sample was non-toxic. But the dissolved oxygen content appearedless than 1.0 mg/dm3, which is below the allowed level (at least 4 mg/dm3in winter)”, – said Head of the Central Territorial Administration of the Ministry of Ecology IlhamSabirov. Oxygen permeates into the water from the atmosphere and is also partly produced in the reservoir by the water plants. Using chlorophyll, green plants decompose carbon dioxide and release carbon, necessary for building living matter, and produce oxygen through photosynthesis, released into the environment, but this process occurs only in the daytime. Therefore, in both cases, thickwinter ice and snowhamper this process. Oxygen is also spent on the decomposition of plant residues accumulated on the reservoir bottom for the spring-summer period. Therefore, dissolved oxygen in the water is exhausting, which results in oxygen starvation and possible mass death of fish and other aquatic organisms. To enable the access of oxygen, wellswere drilled. And to prevent them from freezing and ensure long-time oxygen source to saturate the water, bundles of reeds and cattailswere put into the wells.

Experts of CSIAC of RT Ministry of Ecology re-sampled thewater. Regular monitoring of the oxygen content will be continued.

The Kharovoye is a unique lake in Kazan. Itreceived its name after a rare type of algae hara found only in three lakes of Tatarstan. “Together, we want to keep livestock of the water body, and elevate this natural wealth. Thanks to the Ministry of Ecology for not being indifferent to our problem and making every possible effort to save the lake,” – said social activist NazilyaAlmasheva.
